Site grading matters early because every building entrance, road, parking area, accessible route and landscape feature needs a compatible elevation. A concept that works in plan view may not drain or connect to municipal infrastructure when actual grades are applied.

Grades connect the disciplines

Preliminary grading tests finished-floor elevations, entrance thresholds, driveway slopes, retaining needs, service depths and drainage directions. It also reserves low points, surface storage and major flow routes. These decisions affect architectural floor levels, landscape soil depths and the amount of excavation or fill.

Late elevation changes can ripple through the whole submission. Raising a building may steepen an accessible route; lowering it may compromise a gravity sewer connection or increase flood risk. Moving a catchbasin can conflict with trees or utilities.

Parks and accessible public space

Park grading must balance drainage with usable, accessible space. Paths need compliant geometry, fields and dog off-leash areas need positive drainage, and play areas should not receive uncontrolled runoff.
